Full Description

In February and March 2016 an archaeological excavation took place on the site of a proposed extension of Charing Quarry. A number of post-Medieval features were uncovered during this work, including 4 irregular ditches, and 17 pits. The pits are suggested to be linked to hop-poles, as well as perhaps relating to occupation of the parts of the sites by hop picker camps. The range of artefacts recovered from these features was linked to 19th and 20th Century domestic refuse. The ditches may represent field boundaries, as continuations of two were found in the adjacent excavation. (1)

Note: the GIS location is centrally located as the undated features are spread sparsely across the site.
