In 2008 a series of evaluation trenches were excavated acorss the PB Site, Horsewash Lane, Rochester prior to development of the land. In trench 9 a series of 10th and 11th century features were recorded, comprimising a pit containing Saxo-Norman Pottery, an undated metalled surface and beam slot.

Taken from Archaeology South East, Horsewash Lane site, Rochester (2008):
"Several 10th and 11th century features were recorded in trench 9. These comprised a pit containing Saxo-Norman pottery and an undated metalled surface and beam slot perhaps forming a building or yard with associated rubbish pits. The lack of evidence for this period may be in part due to post-
Roman rises in relative sea level or to the ephemeral nature of the evidence for this date. The lack of recently excavated portions of the Saxo-Norman settlement means that settlement evidence of this date should be regarded as being of local to regional significance."

There is a significant lack of evidence from this period on the site however, the report suggests that this may be due to Post Roman rises in relative sea level or due to the ephemeral nature of the evidence for this period. (6)
