Monument record TQ 66 NW 137 - Prehistoric features, Meopham School

Between 27th April and 10th May 2016 Canterbury Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological evaluation of land occupied by Meopham School, Wrotham Road, Gravesend. 15 trenches were excavated which discovered a number of archaeological features.

From the report:

"archaeological features were identified in seven trenches. These comprised boundary ditches,
pits and a potential northeast to southwest aligned flint track-way. Artefactual material recovered from
these features included up to 253 sherds of late Bronze Age to Iron Age pottery, common burnt flint and
occasional worked flint that included an exceptional side retouched scraper.

The prehistoric features were covered across the [evaluation area] by a deposit of colluvium that was in places up to 0.5m thick. This contained common prehistoric material including burnt flint indicating the presence of a settlement within the vicinity.

No features related to the Anglo-Saxon, medieval or post-medieval period were identified suggesting
that the area of the [evaluation area] has been agricultural land on the periphery of the town of Meopham since at least the medieval period."
