Full Description

A post medieval (likely 19th century) tip layer and pit were located during an archaeological evaluation ahead of the development of the former site of Castle Mount School, Dover. These features relate to landscaping works carried out when castlemount House and grounds were constructed in 1876. The sandy tip layer was located in the middle of trench 1 and consisted of a yellowish grey sandy silt, 0.4-1.2m thick, with a high chalk content and frequent small finds including pottery, shell and CBM. The pit was located at the northern end of trench 6, it had steep sides and a flat base with a diameter of c. 0.8m and maximum depth of 1m. It was filled with a silty loam, mid brown with some chalk fragments and frequent flint (unworked natural) inclusions. The fill also included fragemnts of slate, CBM, clay pipe and pottery. (1-2)
