During an archaeological evaluation undertaken at the former site of the Post Office on Biggin Street, Dover, a Roman ditch and two possible pits were uncovered. An alluvial layer containing pottery dating to the Roman period was also located and may represent the former location of part of the Roman Harbour basin.

In detail; the Roman ditch was located in trench 2, it was greater than 2.8m long and was approximately 1.1m wide with a maximum depth of 0.6m. It contained two clay silt fills which produced sherds of Roman pottery. The possible pits were also located in trench 2, they consisted of irregularly shaped features, only one of which was fully investigated. The investigated example extended beyond the limits of excavation but was greater than 1m E-W and 0.8m N-S. it contained a single clay silt fill which was very similar to that filling the ditch but was devoid of any finds. All three of these features were cut from the same level and are therefore likely to be of the same, Roman, date. Alongside these features a yellowish brown silty clay was observed in trench 4 immediately overlying the natural brickearth; this contained several large sherds of Roman grey ware pottery. This layer probably represents a reworked alluvium relating to the natural infilling of the inner harbour basin. (1)
