Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation at the Prince of Wales House on Princes Street, Dover undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 2008, ahead of the development of the site, a shallow pit containing sherds of Roman pottery was uncovered.
The pit was excavated at the western end of Trench 1, it was 0.24m deep and 1m in diameter. There was only one fill contained sherds of Roman pottery and a fragment of Roman Brick. It was sealed by a thin, light brown layer of silty clay containing occasional flecks of charcoal but no datable material. The pottery consists of a grog tempered body sherd and two joining sherds from a colour coated vessel in a fine oxidised fabric. Neither can be more closely dated than within the Romano-British period. (1)
