Full Description

Cropmarks of several linear ditched features and pits are visible as cropmarks in fields immediately SW of Fordwich on 1980s RCHME oblique aerial photographs [1- 2]. Interpretation of the features is hampered by the fact that most features are only partially visible; cropmarks showing only in very small sections of the field with the remainder of it apparently being not conducive to cropmark production.

Features comprise a D-shaped enclosure, three parallel NW-SE aligned linear features, several other linear features (aligned approximately N-S), two pit groups and several large pit-like features. The majority of linear features appear to be fragments of a boundary or enclosure system, the parallel NW-SE aligned linears are interpreted as a possible trackway. The three large pit-like features may represent quarrying activity. One lies centrally inside the D-shaped enclosure and may be related/contemporary, whilst another has been cut thought by one on the N-S aligned linears.

The features as a whole appear to represent an enclosure system of Later Prehistoric or Romano-British date, settlement activity within the site may also be suggested by the presence of pit clusters.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
