A saltmound and banking, both of probable medieval date, are visible as earthworks on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photography [1-2]. The mound is sub rectangular in plan and measures 55m (NNW-SSE) x 65m (ENE-WSW). Two sections of banking are visible, both are on a similar alignment to the saltmound. The shorter of the two is 52m long and lies 17m north of the saltmound. The longer of the two is 147m long and lies 40m west of the saltmound. The bank features may demark sections of an enclosure around the salt processing area. Examination of modern aerial photographs indicates that the features have been levelled [3]. The earthwork was visible on the Ordnance Survey 1877 edition [4] and was still visible on the Ordnance Survey 1939 edition [5].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [6].

This is likely to be one of the 16 saltmounds referred to in TR 26 SW 5.
