Full Description

This stretch of defensive beach scaffolding is centred at TR 0838 2196, and is visible on vertical aerial photographs of 1943, 1946 and 1947 for a continuous length of approximately 6.2km from the vicinity of The Pilot pub at TR 0916 1855; to Littlestone-on-Sea at TR 0851 2455. Between Lade and Greatstone-on-Sea the course of the scaffolding veers away from the seafront out onto the shallowly-sloping beach at Romney Sands. On some of the aerial photographs the scaffolding is therefore only faintly visible in the water at high tide. This is a continuation of the beach scaffolding to the south at Dungeness (Monument Number 1533475), and it continues yet further northwards as Monument Number 1535069. It is contemporary with a range of other features related to Second World War defence; such as a PLUTO conundrum (Monument Number 1533741), lines of barbed wire (Monument Number 1533410) and rows of concrete anti-tank cubes (Monument Number 1533964). The beach scaffolding had been removed by the time of the vertical aerial photograph of 1959 (1-4).
