Full Description
This length of defensive scaffolding is roughly centred at TR 0927 1685, on the headland at Dungeness. It extends along the coast westwards and northwards for a total of approximately 4.6km. It runs from the Dengemarsh Gut Shafts in the west, to just to the south of Battery Road in the north. Smaller lengths of beach scaffolding branch off from the main seafront stretch to extend inland at three points (TR 0942 1749, TR 0911 1677 and TR 0881 1665). The beach scaffolding continues along the coast to either side of the stretch recorded here. These lengths of scaffolding have been recorded as Monument Numbers 1533948 and 1538537. Along its length, the beach scaffolding was closely associated with a number of contemporary Second World War defensive structures, such as coastal batteries, barbed wire, weapons pits and slit trenches (Monument Number 1533417). By the time of the next available vertical aerial photographs of 1962; the defensive scaffolding had all been removed (1-4).
