Summary

Three Second World War slit trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs within the sandy dunes of the Hythe Firing Ranges (Monument Number 1531850) opposite Pennypot. The three adjacent slit trenches measure no more than 5.7meters in length. The trenches are located within a polygonal area of barbed wire obstructions, suggesting they were to be used as a defensive firing positions. A larger trench is also recorded nearby (Monument Number 1532876). The trenches were subsequently levelled after the war.

Three Second World War slit trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs within the sandy dunes of the Hythe Firing Ranges (Monument Number 1531850) opposite Pennypot at TR 1455 3381 and has been mapped as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment NMP. The three adjacent slit trenches measure no more than 5.7meters in length. The trenches are located within a polygonal area of barbed wire obstructions, suggesting they were to be used as a defensive firing positions. A larger trench is also recorded nearby (Monument Number 1532876). The trenches were subsequently levelled after the war.
