Title An Archaeological Evaluation: The North School, Essella Road, Ashford, Kent
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2015

Abstract/Summary

The report details the Archaeological Evaluation conducted by AS at the North School, Ashford. From the evaluation: "In June and July 2015 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at The North School, Essella Road, Ashford, Kent (NGR TR 0210 4217). The evaluation was … undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning approval on appeal for the proposed construction of up to 25 dwellings with a new access road, car parking facilities and bin storage. The site is situated close to the centre of Ashford and close to the River Stour. Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman medieval and post-medieval remains are all recorded in vicinity of the site. Therefore the site had a potential for multi-period archaeological remains. In the event the evaluation revealed two Early Iron Age pits. Almost all the pottery was contained in Pit F1005 at the northern end of the site, and it yielded 136 sherds (1334g) of Early Iron Age pottery. An undated ditch, a gully and a pit and modern features were also recorded."
