A report detailing the Archaeological Evaluation conducted in September 2015 by CAT. Taken from the report: "Summary: Between 24 and 29 September 2015, the Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) undertook an archaeological evaluation of land to the east of Quarry Wood Industrial Estate, at the rear of Hermitage Lane, Aylesford, Kent. The work was commissioned … as part of preparations for the proposed development of residential properties. A total of ten evaluation trenches were excavated, with limited archaeological remains identified in seven, the majority of which are considered not to be significant. These included a series of linear features, of potential prehistoric date, thought to form part of a field system within a dispersed agricultural landscape. Nineteenth- or twentieth-century pits were probably associated with PDA’s recent use. A single feature is thought to have limited significance, a small pit containing the almost complete remains of an early medieval shell-tempered cooking-pot of twelfth- or early thirteenth-century date. The significance of this feature is unclear but it appears to be isolated suggesting that the area of the PDA still fell within an agricultural landscape in early medieval times, with settlement activity within the immediate vicinity."
