Title Analysis Of Prehistoric Non-Flint Lithics In West Kent
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2018

Abstract/Summary

Sporadic deposits of a quartzose material, a hard quartz bonded silica compound, can develop in fault lines within the local sandstone beds (Tunbridge Wells). Having an appearance similar to quartzite, it has properties suitable for lithic production. Dozens of examples have been identified, including two large assemblages at Rusthall and Southborough. Of these, examples include scrapers, burins, cores, flakes and chips. Positive identification of local sources has been confirmed in association with the parent rock (Tunbridge Wells Sandstone). This review presents evidence for the localized, prehistoric, use of non-flint lithics as a viable alternative to imported flint and argues that a lack of UK based research may have led to the misidentification of such artefacts in the past.
