Title | Report on an Archaeological Watching Brief at No.17 Biggin Street, Dover |
---|---|
Author/Originator | Canterbury Archaeological Trust |
Date/Year | 1998 |
Abstract/Summary
Watching brief on site during 1997 and 1998. In 1997 two soil test pits were dug to the rear of the existing building revealing an infilled 19th century cellar. Below this was a chalk block 18th century wall also part of a cellar. The layer below produced several oyster shells, animal bone fragments and late Roman pot sherds. In one pit (No.2) a distinctive deposit of burnt red clay appears to be a dump rater than in situ and may represent collapsed daub. In 1998, during bulding work, no features were found due to the shallow depth of building foundations. Finds were recovered of struck and burnt flint, animanl bone and seven pot sherds ranging from 4th century AD to MBA.
