Full Description
During the archaeological works associated with the Cheeseman's Green development a spread of pits, gullies, ditches, post holes and structures were found that have been interpreted as representing a small rural settlement and associated enclosures, trackways and field boundaries.
Three main phases were identified, all of broadly Middle to Late Iron Age date. First, a series of enclosures seem to have been laid out in the Middle Iron Age. The most visible subrectangular enclosure had a number of pits and post holes in its northern half but no clear pattern could be seen. Phase 2 involved the laying out of a field system a NW-SE and SW-NE axes. The field system may have comprised two small fields separated by a trackway from three larger fields. Phase 3 involved a large trackway flanked by enclosures.
A subsequent phase of landuse saw a less regular field system laid out accompanied by features containing Late Iron Age to Early Romano-British pottery.
Along with the Mid/Late Iron Age field system were at least 8 circular structures though the relationship between the structures and the field systems was not clear. The circular structures varied in size from 2.8 - 8.0 m wide. All but two could have had entrances facing E or SE though none had an entire ring gully due to truncation of the features. Four square post built structures (granary-type) were observed, probably dating to the later Iron Age or Roman periods. Two late Iron Age cremation burials were also found. Finds included pottery, burnt flint, charcoal, and possible loomweights (1)
