Full Description
A broad range of Iron Age finds on the site suggests a small rural settlement that contained roundhouses, fields, track-ways and boundaries. In addition, a number of pits and features dating to the Iron Age period suggest relatively continuous occupation into the Romano-British period. Broadly contemporary settlement of this period is also well represented with a number of structures, and associated pits and hearths, recorded, comprising: 14 round-houses (Areas 1, 2, 3E, 4S, 5 and 6) five granary-type structures (Areas 1, 3E, 4S and 5) and other groups of post-holes that may represent other structures. There is also some industrial evidence in the form of iron smithing (Area 3E and 7) and pottery production (Area 3E), and crafts such as textile working and bone-carving are also attested within the locality by recovered artefacts. The discovery of germinated grain is indicative of brewing.
The rectilinear field system, one ditch of which passes directly through the enclosure entrance, appears to indicate a substantial reorganisation of the landscape. Some of the round-houses appear to be closely associated with this phase, three of them, for example, lying within one of the small fields at the NE.
Mortuary activity is indicated by the five urned cremation burials of Late Iron Age/early Romano-British date found in Areas 1, 5 and 7.
There is evidence of reuse and reorganisaiton into the Romano-British period.
Four coins (one silver) and large assemblages of Iron Age and Roman pottery and animal bone were found. The pottery assemblage includes amphorae, mortaria and imported pottery (includes 68 fragments of Samian ware, 3 other imported finewares, 9 North Gaulish whiteware and 1 Mayen ware). "A small pit 18125... in the NW corner of the subrectangular enclosure, contained the remains of three Late Iron Age/early Romano-British vessels, one containing the other two". Other artefacts discovered included iron knives, loomweights, iron slag, an iron cauldron fragment, quernstones, glass vessel fragments, oven superstructure fragments, a glass bead, a spindle whorl, the catchplate of a copper alloy bow brooch, two bone beads, window glass, an almost complete ceramic crucible, and a pit containing 286 pieces of stone.
"A possible lead curse tablet, consisting of a sheet of lead folded in half and then in half again, was recovered from Romano-British ditch 15371 (Area 5). The object has been Xradiographed, but no internal details are visible."
The site also yielded a rich plant (ecofact) assemblage. (1)
