Full Description

Archaeological work from 2004 to 2016 across the Cheeseman's Green area found in Area 6 evidence late prehistoric (probably bronze age / iron age) ditch system, an enclosure, pits and post holes. There was also a single round house. In the late iron age / early Romano-British period further enclosures were established including a rectangular enclosure with a long fence or palisade, and a central post-built structure 14m x 7m in size was built. Wheat grains found within suggested that brewing may have been carried out in the bulding. There were numerous scattered features and a cremation was also found.

The large palisaded enclosure was the main feature of the late iron age / Roman phase (most features seem to have been Roman). It does not seem to have been defensive enclosure. The building in the centre has been interpreted as possibly a ritual structure based on the well-trodden surfaces around it and the character of some of the finds (1)
