Full Description

Medieval features were excavated at Deichmann, Canterbury in 2019. These included pits, levelling deposits, possible surfaces, and possible occupation deposits. Some of these features may have been associated with the construction and occupation of the Austin friary, known to have existed on the site during this time.
The pit measured 2.5m wide by 1m deep and is thought to have been associate with the mid-14th century construction of the friary.
Other features at the site include levelling deposits within the pit feature - presumably to prevent slumping within the pit. A working horizon/surface and occupation/tread deposits were also excavated. These features may have been associated with the construction and early phases of the friary. The main finds associated with these features are mortar, flint, and chalk.
A later pit feature truncated four of the graves, suggesting it is from a later period of occupation and may represent the foundations of a struicture within the church nave. The pit measured 1.86m in length, 1.08m in width, and 0.3m in depth. The pit contained a backfill of mixed chalk rubble bonded with yellow mortar. This contained human remains thought to have been derived from the earlier burial features at the site (TR 15 NE 1989)), and a late medieval (15th century) worked bone (and copper alloy) knife handle (1).
