Full Description
Features of a medieval date were recorded during evaluation trenching on land adjacent to 150 Monkton Street, Monkton. Clear evidence for surviving medieval archaeology was encountered in trench 3 situated about 11m from, and parallel to, Monkton Street. Notable were three potential wells along with four pits. The first two of these pits would appear to be post-medieval in date however. A metalled surface and associated construction cut may represent a trackway leading south from the main roadway. The date of this feature is less certain as a few (possibly intrusive) post-medieval sherds were recovered from a layer underlying the gravel metaling. Although the remains may be of post-medieval date, the route may have originated in the later medieval period. A north-south aligned ditch mid-way along the trench is aligned perpendicular to the street and may represent a plot boundary. Of the potential wells, one was hand excavated to a depth of 1.20m which demonstrated the feature had vertical sides with its upper profile resembling an erosion cone – this profile is undoubtedly indicative of a well. The feature was further tested using an augur and was found to have a depth of 3.40m. The spatial distribution and similar size of the other nearby features would suggest they served a similar function. Of interest is their alignment and position, which suggests that they were respecting a nearby boundary, probably not far south of the trench. This could possibly be represented by the linear medieval feature in trench 2. The proximity and distribution of the features in relation to the road might suggest an association with former properties fronting the south side of Monkton Street. However, it is perhaps more likely, considering the other ditch alignments on the site that an agricultural settlement enclosure. To the west of trench 3, trench 6 revealed two possibly associated linear features. One linear was aligned perpendicular to Monkton Street whilst the other linear was orientated approximately parallel to the street, together they form a possible enclosure boundary. A single pit was situated immediately to the north. Cultural material recovered from the fills included frequent oyster shell, occasional medieval pottery sherds and a quernstone fragment. At least two substantial boundary ditches were encountered across trenches 8, 9 and 10. Medieval pottery was recovered from both of these ditches. Considering the absence of features to the south of the southern ditch, this line represents a southern boundary to the medieval activity on the site. (information summarised from source) (1)
