Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway rail station off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, a wide variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were uncovered. These included Two ditches, one aligned north-east to south-west and the second aligned northwest to south-east and located at the north-west limit of the excavation area, may represent part of a field system of Bronze Age date. One of the ditches represents a recut of an earlier ditch on the same alignment. The enclosure probably extended further to the east, but the ditch became very shallow at this point and could not be traced. No dateable material was recovered from these ditches. However, they were cut by a pit which contained a possible placed deposit comprising a large, weathered fragment of Thanet Sandstone and a large sherd of pottery dated 1100 BC – 700 BC. To the south of the enclosure, in the area of Neolithic activity, a group of three pits may also be of Bronze Age date. One pit produced pottery dated 1500 BC – 1100 BC. To the east, two pits have also been attributed to this phase. Pit produced pottery dated 900 BC – 600 BC. The second pit, however, contained another possible placed deposit comprising flint nodules, Thanet Sandstone lumps and several sherds of pottery principally dated early to middle Neolithic. A small quantity of tiny sherds of middle to late Bronze Age pottery (1300 BC – 1100 BC) were also recovered from the primary fill of the feature, suggesting that the Neolithic pottery is residual or curated.
