Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway rail station off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, a wide variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were uncovered. These included a palimpsest of ditches, post-holes and pits that attest to long-lived agricultural and settlement activity. Parallel ditches, perhaps indicative of droveways, may also be represented. Situated just west of the north-south hollow-way were the partial remains of a roundhouse. This structure was represented by a group of post-holes and several stake-holes. A series of slots appeared to represent sockets for planks forming the outer wall. The building had an entrance to the south-east and a ring gully. No dateable material was recovered from the structural features. However, the fill of the ring gully produced an assemblage of 68 fragments of pottery dated to the Iron Age. Evidence for mixed agriculture comprising both animal husbandry and cereal production is also represented at this site. Alongside the field systems and potential droveways, other features include potential four-post and six-post structures which could be associated with grain storage. The four-post structures were located towards the south of the site, comprising one solitary example and a possible sequence of structures. One six-post structure was located just south-west of the round-house. In addition, one very large pit which measured 3.5m by 4m and 1.7m deep, could represent a storage pit.
