Full Description

During an archaeological investigation ahead of the construction of Thanet Parkway rail station off Hengist Way, Cliffsend, a wide variety of archaeological features finds and deposits were uncovered. These included group of features representing early Roman activity dating to the 1st century AD, as well as evidence for the continued use of some of the features which had been established in the Iron Age. The evidence suggests that both hollow-ways remained in use. Central to the site, ditches relating to a large Iron Age enclosure saw the addition of two further ditches which resulted in the creation of a smaller rectilinear enclosure with an entrance located at the east. However, this enclosure was subsequently replaced by a series of rectilinear enclosures on a north-south to east-west alignment forming a ‘ladder’-type arrangement. A number of early Roman ditches appear to have been subsequently recut or reestablished as part of the later Roman activity. To the east of the waterhole, numerous intercutting north-south aligned ditches were recorded. Some of these may have originated in the Iron Age period and they could be associated with the hollow-way. Cutting these was a ditch demarcating a rectilinear enclosure which extended beyond the east limit of the site. At least three near-complete pottery vessels dated late first to early second century AD were recovered from the south-west corner of this enclosure ditch during the evaluation. Several groups of pits and post-holes may date to this phase of activity. However, no discernable patterns have been identified. It would seem, therefore, that during this phase of activity the locality was principally used for agriculture. (information summarised from source) (1)
