Full Description
Medieval enclosure, ditches, pits, and post-holes were excavated on land at Hillborough, Herne Bay in 2022.
Medieval activity at the site comprised "twenty-two features including pits and postholes which produced early medieval pottery, however most of the features... were undated but may tentatively be of the same date. The majority of postholes… do not conform to any structural layout with the exception of a possible ‘C’ shaped structure in the middle of the site. A post hole from this structure produced early medieval pottery.
The medieval activity [to the] south and north of May Street [included] pits and ditches. Three of the ditches formed an enclosure dating to the medieval period. A fourth ditch may have formed a possible east-west trackway with the northern extent of the enclosure. A pit... contained an intact medieval bone flute/whistle associated with pottery dated between 1300-1375AD. Also within this enclosure was a pit 2302 and tree throw hole 2316 which were dated to the late medieval period almost one hundred years after the enclosure" (from the original report, 1).
