Full Description

During a stip map and sample excavation associated with the installation of a foul water drain, part of a wider scheme of archaeological excavation at westwood cross, a large number of linear features were uncovered. These features were broadly categorised as field systems and enclosure ditches previously identified in the evaluation phase of works at the site. In addition to this several discrete pit features were recorded. Multiple parallel north east/south west aligned linear features were observed with a distance measuring approximately 40m between each. This is suggested to comprise a field system dating to the Romano-British period. Cutting this field system, several ditches forming sub-rectangular and sub-circular enclosures were excavated. These cut the earlier field system and are broadly similar alignment. Artefactual material judged to be Romano-British in date was recovered from several of these features. This may suggest a change in use of the land from cultivation of crops to animal husbandry. Located toward the south west of the excavated area a number of large discrete pits were excavated. These measured approximately 1.2m in depth and 2m in diameter are considered to be grain storage pits that were later utilised as rubbish pits. They are tentatively dated to the Romano- British period. (information summarised from source) (1)
