Excavations in 1842 located the site of a supposed Romano-British walled cemetery with towers. (TQ 75 SE 2). An Evaluation to the east of Romano-British walled cemetery in 1996 only revealled two poss RB ditches and a single pit with sherds of early AS pot in the fill (TQ 75 SE 130). Both ditches contained mortar fragements, but only one contained pottery, one fragement of Samian ware 1stC AD and the other of locally produced sandy-tempered RB ware.(1)

A geophysics report at the site in 1998 produced limited positive findings and led to further excavation. (2)

Excavation in 1998 identified more Ro field drainage ditches and a large LIA ditch and pottery but still no positive evidence for the location of the cemetery. (3) Reassessment of the results of the 1998 excavation did identify the cemetery.
