Monument record TQ 67 SE 15 - Chalk Roman villa

Summary

A Roman building, possibly a villa, excavated in 1962 and found to have been destroyed by fire during the late 3rd century AD. Also found were several pits including the graves of 3 infants and a rubbish tip with up to mid 1st century AD pottery, some of which may have been Iron Age. East of this site a chalk wall, a hypocaust and a number of tiles had been excavated in 1959. This site was later built over but at a later date, remains of a complex Roman bath house with hypocausts was discovered nearby, west of Castle Lane.

Full Description

A Roman British building at TQ 67607298 was excavated in 1962 by Johnston, (1) who found that it had been destroyed by fire in the late 3rd c. There was no evidence for the date of building which was possibly late in the 2nd c. This site would appear to cover an area of 150 feet by 50 feet by 60 feet (46 m by15m by 18m).Several pits in the chalk floor included the rough graves of three infants. In the 4th c. the site was used as a rubbish dump, evidently from a near-by house. Also excavated were two arms of an earlier ditch [see plan], the filling of which contained pottery, none later than mid-1st c. A.D. To the east [sited on Johnston's plan at TQ 67647299], Allen had excavated in 1959 and found a well coursed chalk wall, Hypocaust and other tiles, etc, indicating a substantial Roman Building. (1-3) The site of the 1962 excavations is now built over and there is nothing to be seen. The site of the 1959 excavation is littered with Roman building debris but there are no remains in situ visible. Both sitings as given by Johnston (Auth 1) were confirmed by the tenant small holder. (4) A compactly planned bath-house has been uncovered west of Castle Lane. In its original form the building contained channelled hypocausts and may have served a different purpose. It was later subdivided into numerous small rooms, damaging the original hypocaust system. (5) Additional bibliography. (6-14)
