Full Description
A series of 19 evaluation trenches dug around the former Marine South Barracks. Along with trenches relating to demolished Barrack buildings (TR 35 SE 413) most of the other excavated features appeared to be ditches and gullies superimposed over one another, some covered by wind blown sand, relating to field systems prior to the barracks. The two trenches which contained the most features were T12 & 14 at either ends of the site. Although a number of flints were recovered only 11 sherds of pottery were context based and with the exception of two L18-E19thC peices the rest were all prehistoric ranging from the Bronze Age to LIA/E-Roman. Stratigraphic evidence suggests that there was probably at least three phases of ditches from the prehistric or Roman period. In additon there seems to be evidence of casual use of the site during the LBA-EIA. (TR 35 SE 412) Other features found were of demolished barrack blocks built atoun 1860 and demolished a hundred years later.(1)
