Full Description
Due to the small scale of the excavation it was not possible to date features with any precision. Evidence of early medieval-medieval activity was found across the site in the form of ditches, pits, flooring and metalling. One ditch aligns approximately with a ditch found at 29 Queen's Road by the Sheppey Archaeological Society (No further information on this site). Associated pottery finds suggest that early medieval occupation of the site may have begun in the late 5th century, before the establishment of the first nunnery. Generally early medieval pottery found dated to the 7th to mid 9th century, including low quantities of Ipswich type ware. Later occupation retates to the nearby Abbey (TQ 97 SE 1).(1)
