During excavations by the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit (KARU) in advance of gravel extraction by Brett Gravel Ltd between 1989 and 1995 over 200 struck flints were found along with three small pottery sherds of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. These finds suggest prehistoric activity in the area, possibly associated with the small stream to the west of the excavation site. A polished flint axehead found in the fill of an Iron Age ditch in 1989 (TQ 94 NW 52) may possibly have been associated with these finds. (1-2) In 2014 further excavations took place in the area. Two pits were excavated measuring around 0.2m by 0.1m with a depth of 0.5. One pit contained a flint blade and three flakes. It also contained a large group of pot sherds. These all dated to the Late Neolthic/Early Bronze Age and may relate to the earlier finds. (3)
