Abstract/Summary
A report detailing the results of a programme of archaeological work at Charing Quarry (Kent), in advance of sand extraction at the site. The excavation involved six phases of archaeological watching brief, with subsequent excavations. The work took place between October 1997 and March 2013.
The earliest identifiable activity on the sites dated to the Bronze Age, with a later Iron Age/early Roman field system, smelting and cremations also identified. An early medieval field system followed the same alignment consisting of a droveway and a series of enclosures. A number of finds were recovered including pottery sherds and flakes. The latest activity on the site was post-Medieval and was the result of an area of brickearth extraction.
