Full Description

NB: Late Iron Age activity was represented by a small quantity of pottery in residual saxon features, although the similarity between Late Bronze Age and local Iron Age ceramics is noted. The report seems to be suggesting that some of the pottery identified as being of Late Bronze Age date could be of later date and therefore some of the features?? The only diagnostic iron age sherd was a rim from an ovoid jar with incised decoration. A separate monument record was not created for these residual sherds.

A small number of Romano-British features were identified during a watching brief on a pipeline project, south of Hoo St. Werburgh vicarage. As with the prehistoric (TQ 77 SE 163) and the Saxon (TQ 77 SE 165) features recorded, the Roman features were identified in two clusters. They formed a small minority of all the features recorded.
Within Area A (the eastern cluster centred on TQ 7828 7170), three pits were identified on the basis of small pottery assemblages recovered (one also contained Roman ceramic building material).
Within Area B (centred on TQ 7786 7164) a large feature ran under the northern easement. The feature was at least 10m long and 1.10m deep. It contained large quantities of Roman ceramic building material, including roof, flue and possible hypocaust tiles. This material has been interpreted as being indicative of the presence of a Roman structure nearby. It was suggested in the assessment report that the feature was part of a possible east-west running linear.
Residual Roman pottery and ceramic building material were also recovered from the later saxon features.
The perimeter of the observed remains is given in the grid refs on the main monument form [1 and 2].
