Full Description

During the initial evaluation work on the site pottery was recovered that suggested Saxo-Norman activity in the locality [1].

The excavation phase of works revealed elements of a medieval field system, consisting of a recut linear ditch, a rectangular feature and a pit. The ditch was at first considered to be Roman due to the presence of a small amount of Roman material, however the presence of medieval pottery in all three fills of the recut suggested a medieval date. The rectangular feature, containing medieval pottery, cut the recut of the ditch, leading the report to suggest they were contemporary. The pit contained medieval pottery and a fragment of quern stone. The report suggests that the presence of elements of a field system and quern stone, imply that a medieval farmstead must have been somewhere nearby, perhaps to the south. The pottery types also suggest domestic activity in the vicinity [2].

A monument record has not been created for the Roman material found on site. Mid bronze age-early iron age activity was recorded on site (TQ 97 SW 76), along with a number of possible early medieval sunken feature buildings (TQ 97 SW 85).

Desk based assessment of land north of the site [3].
