Monument record TR 16 NE 86 - Area of late Iron Age/Romano-British activity south of the Thanet Way, Eddington, Herne Bay

Summary

One main concentration of archaeological features dating to the late Iron Age/Romano-British period were recorded during archaeological works. A possible cremation burial was identified. Pottery dating evidence suggested that the site was occupied from c.75 BC to c. AD 250.

Full Description

One main concentration of late iron age/Romano-British archaeology was identified during evaluation work at Eddington. A wide variety of features were recorded, the majority were dated to the late iron age and contained locally produced Belgic Type ceramics. The late iron age features were spread across the south western corner of the site, the later Romano-British features in the central southern part of this area. The pottery assemblage recovered suggested occupation of the site from the early first century BC through to AD 250. One trench revealed the broken ceramic base of a possible cremation vessel. It should be noted that many of the features also contained flint tempered pottery and so it was hard to draw a distinction between the identified late bronze age/early iron age field system (see TR 16 NE 85) and the later late iron age/Romano-British field system evidence. Previous archaeological work north of the Thanet way had also identified features of late iron age and Romano-British date, which may represent part of the same site or sites.
See also TR 16 NE 87 for later mid-early medieval activity [1].
Evaluation and excavation work to the west, within the grounds of Herne Bay High School, revealed further large numbers of late iron age/early Roman features, tied into the evidence from this site (see TR 16 NE 88 and also TR 16 NE 89-91) [2, 3 and 4].

Phase II of the excavations was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2000. Late Iron Age/Romano British features included pits, pit complexes, post holes, ditches and curvilinear ditches and cremations which are thought tpo be the remains of rectangular and curvilinear enclosures and a cemetery area. There is also an early Anglo-Saxon enclosure.(5)
