Monument record TQ 77 SE 176 - Prehistoric to Saxon activity

Summary

A large number of trenches and test pits forming part of an archaeological evaluation revealed a number of discrete areas of archaeological activity dating from the prehistoric period through to the Saxon period. Significant trunction of the archaeological deposits was observed. Most notable was a Romano-British industrial site with a probable pottery kiln, a Late Bronze Age settlement or probable possible funerary site and a possible Late Bronze Age small scale industrial site.

Full Description

A large number of trenches and test pits forming part of a large archaeological evaluation along the proposed route of a gas transmission pipeline revealed a number of discrete areas of archaeological activity dating from the prehistoric period through to the Saxon period. Significant trunction of the archaeological deposits was observed.

Most notable was a Romano-British industrial site with a probable pottery kiln, a Late Bronze Age settlement or probable possible funerary site and a possible Late Bronze Age small scale industrial site.

Twenty-eight environmental samples were taken revealing more information about the contemporary environments of all the periods represented. The site only produced a limited animal bone assemblage consisting of 20 fragments. Finds included: a prehistoric worked flint assemblage including a variety of different types, prehistoric and Romano-British pottery, 26 pieces of Late Iron Age/Roman slag, Roman ceramic building material as well as post-roman ceramic building material (1).
