Full Description
Evaluation undertaken by Archaeology South-East in 2009 at the Brisley Farm school site, Ashford.
Ditches, which may constitute a Mid-Late Iron Age field system, based on their alignment to dated ditches found in surrounding excavations. (1)
The subsequent excavation revealed a pit dating to the Late Iron Age. This could be a refuge pit. 2 post holes adjacent to it may be of the same date. 4 shallow cuts may be further pits, or could be tree throws. A further pit in the west of the site dates to the Early Roman period. Three features may be cremations, perhaps dating to the late 1st / early 2nd century AD.
Dating evidence from the excavation has revised the date of the ditches to Late Iron Age to Early Roman. Two interupted dithes running NW-SE form a probable trackway in the NE of the site. The gaps in the ditches are probably contemporary, representing openings into adjacent fields. Other ditches may show a field system in existance in the Early Roman period. (2)
