Full Description

[Area TR 281692] (Ring-ditches and enclosures). (1) The ground has been ploughed - nothing was seen. To the west a double row of patches of flint pebbles in the soil are probably associated with early wartime installations. (2) TR 281692. Cropmarks showing large double ditched enclosure, two small rectangular enclosures superimposed on the south corner and a small curvilinear enclosure to the north. Other internal features visible. 83) TR 282693 (accurate to within 50m only) Cropmarks indicating site of Bronze Age barrows. site no. 18. (4) Cropmarks show circular enclosures, probably barrows. Some of them are connected by straight lengths of ditches. (5) (TR 28006925 sited from Isle of Thanet Arch. Unit S.M.A. Map Diagram).Cropmarks are distributed all over the field north of the railway lineand occasionally appear in the turf of the promenade. While some markings are caused by World War I practice trenches and saps, others appear to represent a barrow cemetery with superimposed linear markings. (6) photographs (7-26)

The cropmark remains of the large rectilinear enclosure described above were seen on aerial photographs and the site mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project in 2024 -NMR 4181/16 01-AUG-1988, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 21-APR-2007 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM MAR-2022. ACCESSED 21-MAY-2024 . The enclosure is defined by two ditches. The inner enclosure measures c119m x 115m, outer enclosure 131m x 124. There is a third ditch on the western side and the SE corner has a rectilinear enclosure incorporated into it which is cut by the railway line. Internally there are cropmarks of ditches, possibly sub-divisions as well as the remains of Second World War anti-landing obstructions which also appear as a cropmark ditch at times. There are traces of a single ring ditch, possibly a round barrow in the SW corner and two large ring ditches outside the NE corner. A few small pits of uncertain date are located within the rectilinear enclosure. A large oval enclosure is cut by the eastern side of the enclosure. All of these curvilinear enclosures have been recorded separately (27-29).
