Summary

A small Bronze Age hoard was found in 1981 by a metal detectorist after work to lay a pipeline had revealed late Bronze Age settlement remains in the area. Amongst the finds were a socketed axe, a sword or dagger hilt and blade fragments and part of a continental type bracelet. These finds have all been dated to the late Bronze Age. Three other Bronze Age hoards are known from the area and an investigation of the site in c.1992 revealed hut sites, pits, ditches and a further two bronzes as well as ceramic and flint assemblages.(location accurate to the nearest 50m based on available information)

Full Description

TR 277654. Located to the nearest fifty metres. Bronze hoard discovered in 1981 by a metal detector. The hoard consisted of a rim piece from a tiny bronze vessel, a socketed axe, a fragment from a blade and part of the tang of a sword. Site no 143. (1, 5)

Evaluation of the site at TR 277 655 after LBA settlement remains were encountered by a pipeline trench and the discovery of 4 LBA hoards within the space of 1 ha. Hut sites, pits and ditches and a further 2 bronzes were found. The ceramic and flint assemblages will prove useful in the regional study of LBA settlement. (4)
