Full Description
In 2007 a programme of field walking and geophysical survey was undertaken by Archaeological Services & Consultancy at Margetts pit. The field walking found only a sherd of grog-tempered Late Iron Age/ early Roman pottery. The geophysical survey revealed a large double-ditched enclosure c.80m x c.60m. (1)
In 2009 an excavation was carried out at Margetts Pit by Wessex Archaeology. Evidence for Bronze Age to Late Iron Age/early Roman activity was found across the site. In the Late Iron Age a subrectangular double-ditched enclosure was laid out to the northwest of the area occupied in the earlier phases and became the new focus for activity on the site until the second half of the 1st century AD. This feature was only partly exposed during the excavation though its full size was revealed in an earlier geophysical survey. A series of pits and post holes were clustered in the south of the enclosure, including a Late Iron Age four-post structure. A late prehistoric, but otherwise undated, field system is on the same orientation as this enclosure, perhaps suggesting it is of similar date. Small quantities of early Romano-British pottery was found in the upper fills of the Late Iron Age features, suggesting abandonment at this date. (1)
