In 2007 Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation and an excavation. A Roman enclosure measuring 30m x 30m was found. It was possibly part of a ladder settlement along the ridge in the area. A building had stood within the enclosure, two flint walls survived. These walls were thought to be the bases for sill beams of a timber framed building. A possible post-built lean-to extension was found to the north east. A number of pits and two hearths were found within the enclosure. Pits were also found outside of the enclosure, including one which had evidence of wood lining. The pit had been backfilled and this contained charred hulled wheat grain, wheat chaff, weeds, fragments of slag, quernstone, fired clay and two pieces of a bronze mirror. The mirror was of Hull's T9 from southern Gaul. Further deposits of slag and hammer scale suggest iron working on the site. The site appears to have been in use between the mid/late 1st century to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD. (1,2)
