Full Description
CgMs comissioned Archaeology South-East to undertake and evaluation of six trenches on land at Stonehouse Hospital, London Road, Stone, Dartford between 17th and 21st October 2013. An undated ditch was excavated in trench 6 which was sealed by a chalk layer with yellow stock brick of mid 19th century to early 20th century date. The trench was aligned north-north-west to south-south-east and featured cut sides at 45 degrees and a flat base, measuring 1.55 m wide and 0.40m in depth. It continued into the baulk.
Trench 5 revealed a regular, circular pit with vertical edges, a flat base and measuring 0.7m in diameter and 0.38m deep. The fill was a mid brown grey silt sand with frequent gravel inclusions and two circular iron hoops, similar to those on a barrel, brick fragment, pottery sherds and clay pipe fragment. The fill date is of mid 19th to early 20th century date. (1)
