Full Description

Several NE-SW aligned ditches on the southern slope in Zone 6 were the only features which cut the colluvial layer which was present across this area. Their layout closely reflects some field boundary elements shown on the first edition OS map. They also follow the trend of Roman features in this area most probably reflecting the topography but possibly also the presence of long lived boundaries which may have survived as hedges, for example. The southernmost and largest of these was up to 1.8m wide and 0.6m deep and may have been a significant boundary. It contained a few sherds of Medieval pottery of probably 12th- mid 13th century date. The two ditches to the north were less than 1m wide and 0.3m deep and were parallel, at just over 3m apart and seem to have defined a trackway which partly continued to the west.
