Full Description
A Roman field system was seen extending into Zone 20 of the excavations associated with the construction of the East Kent Access route in Thanet. The east west ditch approximately followed the crest of the slope and continued for around 200m. A north south aligned cobble trackway some 2m wide appears to be associated with the ditch (though their stratigraphic relationship is not clear). In the south east corner of an area defined by one of these probable field boundary ditches was a small group of features including three graves and three further ditches or gullies. Only one of the graves could be dated with any certainty (by the presence of Roman pottery and hobnails). Within this grave were also several nails and iron fittings suggesting the presence of a coffin. (information summarised from source (1-2)
