Monument record TR 36 NE 675 - Neolithic to Bronze Age Activity along the Margate to Broadstairs Pipe Installation

Summary

During excavations relating to the installation of a pipeline between Margate and Broadstairs between 2005 and 2006 a total of 619 features and a vast assemblage of finds were discovered. Neolithic and Bronze Age Activity was discovered in Areas 3 and 14 (See Report SKE29263). Note: The large number of features and finds over a very broad geographical area meant mapping accurately where each monument is along the pipeline and classifying monuments chronologically would have led to an unclear number of records. Thus monument mapped as a single linear feature and separated chronologically. Where apporopriate the excavation area where features were located has been recorded.

Full Description

During excavations relating to the installation of a pipeline between Margate and Broadstairs between 2005 and 2006 a total of 619 features and a vast assemblage of finds were discovered. Neolithic and Bronze Age Activity was discovered in Areas 3 and 14 (See Report SKE29263) (1).

The Neolithic features included a possible Neolithic enclosure, an Early Bronze Age ring ditch which may point to the presence of an Early Bronze Age barrow and a series of Mid-Late Bronze Age ditches, pits and a trackway.

A vast amount of environmental data was also collected and is impossible to record accurately due to the sheer volume of data. It is recorded as the large quantities of plant and animal rmeains and includes charred seeds, marine shells and animal bone from across the study area.
