Full Description
Between 1st and 3rd February 2016 an archaeological evaluation was carried out involving the excavation of 5 trenches. Trench 3 contained a number of archaeological features (including two ditches, a possible quarry and a pit). The southernmost ditch contained two fills. Both fills contained Early/Middle Iron Age pottery sherds, and one of the fills contained worked flint pieces also.
The full extent of the ditch is not known due to restrictions of trench size. The ditch measured >2m long, 1.4m wide, and 0.6m deep. At the base of the ditch is a possible post hole. No finds were associated with the post hole.
A total of 6 early/middle Iron Age pottery sherds were recovered (39g). The sherds were of flint tempered fabric. The flint pieces were undiagnostic.
The ditch appears perpendicular to the probable path of an Iron Age/Roman coaxial field system identified during the same archaeological evaluation, and parallel to the other ditch from this trench. (1)
