Full Description
As part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link works, a large area at Pepper Hill was excavated following the discovery of the Roman cemetery. Preceding the cemetery were a series of pits dating to the Late Iron Age. A cluster of 12 pits were located on the western side of the site. The function of these pits was not clear but it is thought that they represent quarry pits, possibly for the extraction of brickearth. A ditch dated to the same period. It ran for 12m and extended beyond the southern limit of excavation. (1-2)
