Summary

Evaluation and excavation work revealed numerous features (pits, post holes ditches and back-filled cellar) ranging from prehistoric to C19th in date. Various small finds including animal bones, glassware products, pottery fragments and metal worked items - mainly C17th date.

Full Description

Evaluation work recorded three intercutting features - two of which were proved to be pits of probable C13th-14th date. Ditch of C19th date found in separate trench. Also undated pit and pit of medieval date. Backfilled cellar of at least C17th-18th date (1) .

Excavation work revealed 48 features. Prehistoric, Romano British, C12th-13th, C14th-15th, C16th-17th, and C18th-19th date, other undated. One possible prehistoric pit, one gully of possible Iron Age/Romano British date, two gullies C12-13th, 7 pits C12th-13th, two 14-15th pits, six single pits, intercutting pits, two possible post holes. Stone lined pit with multiple fills, interpreted as a possible elaborate cesspit or industrial feature. Two stoned-lined pits of C18th-19th date and several undated features.
Various small finds mostly C17th, but ranging from Late Iron Age to C19th. Includes potsherds, corroded nails, horse shoe fragment, figure eight buckle, leather decoration, assortment of pins and lace ends, peg tiles and brick fragments, 230 pieces of clay pipe, 2 Nuremburg jettons, various glass items (wine bottles, glass stems and window pane fragments).
565 fragments of bone. Mainly large mammal - cattle. No small (bird/fish bones). Shells (mainly oyster). (2)
