Full Description
C19th features relating to cement production at St Peter's pit, Wouldham. Features include tramway embankments, and a brick revetted cutting, a brick revetted base to a late C19th reservoir and slight trace of one of the lime kilns. C19th workshop, various C19th and C20th buildings and an undated linear earthwork.(1)
Area 3 contained Industrial remains of Kiln structure, brick base of chimney associated with kiln and a partial brick wall. In Area 6 there was found a late post-medieval ditch which contained glass, clay pipe fragments and brick.(2)
Area 1B, to the west of the river, contained remnants of buildings associated with dockside activity relating to the limeworks, including a concrete revetment and dock wall, a walled enclosure relating to a smaller dock or inlet to the south of the main dock, and remains of other concrete structures. This area also contained the remains of a possible Second World War gun pit. Area 9, adjacent to the east bank, also includes the remains of features associated with the river, including a river wall and levee and traces of numerous brick-built dockside buildings. Evidence of the limeworks is also extensive; several sections of masonry wall relating to a large mill type building (as seen in a historic photograph of this site) remain, as does a partially collapsed structure comprising approximately twenty lime kilns.
