Amended description following Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey:
A Salvage Yard built as part of Richborough Port (MWX43487), a major WWI port serving Allied troops on the Western Front [1]. A salvage operation was run from the port in the immediate post-WWI period, lasting into the early 1920s. It is not clear what the components of this facility were and whether there were any associated permanent structures. The facility appears to have been removed by WWII and no features that appear to be associated with the WWI salvage operation are visible in this area on US Air Force vertical aerial photography from the 1940s [2]. By this date, the area had become occupied by elements of the WWII anti-invasion coastal crust defences, see Related Monuments.
