Full Description
From the report:
From the report: "Area E was located at the north-eastern side of the High Cross road junction. The site was approximately 60 m in length, aligned NW-SE within a 2.1 m wide pipe trench. The area exposed at the north-western end was to facilitate the construction of the pipe junctions.
At the south-eastern end the site was bounded by two parallel, broadly north-south orientated ditches.. The late iron age / early Roman settlement activity within this area is undoubtedly a continuation of the activity/settlement found in area D. The ditches appear to form the south-eastern extent of this activity with no archaeology encountered beyond this boundary.
The lower fill of ditch 1103 contained two complete pots of late iron age / early Roman date with associated burnt and unburnt animal bone deposits as well as a considerable assemblage of fragmentary, early 2nd century AD pottery. The inner ditch.. contained sherds of late 1st century AD date.
To the west the archaeology (postholes, pits and linear features) was heavily truncated, presumbably by ploughing. Virtually every feature, however, provided dating evidence in the form of pottery, indicating a late iron age to 2nd century AD date for the occupation of the site. Unfortunately the narrow linear nature of the trench as well as the truncated condition of the archaeology, makes a meaningful interpretation of the relationships of features in this area very difficult. In general terms the numerous features within this area all suggest occupational activity within a clearly defined enclosure.
Two parallel ditches at the north-western extent of the area.. aligned SW-NE appear to form an internal enclosure division. Ditch (1165), a continuation of (1158) to the south-west was revealed in the strippped area at the north-western end of Area E. Two further late iron age / early Roman features were revealed to the north of this area. A pit/posthole (1169) was positioned within the arc of a cuirvilinear gully cut … which was only exposed for a 3 m length."
